Catalogue compilation vinyl

Compilations are easy to file under the wrong artist. Catalogue the name on the cover, and use the track list to remember who is on it.

Use the title on the jacket

Various-artists records should be searchable by the album title. The artist line is often just Various, which is a poor thing to browse by and an easy way to file the record under the wrong name.

The tracks are why you kept it. A track list on the record page is more useful than a vague memory of one song, and it is how search can lead you back from that song.

Label samplers, soundtracks, and 'best of the year' albums are all compilations. Catalogue the title on the jacket. A note can name the label or the film if the cover credit is confusing.

The title on the cover is the row

Do not file a compilation under the one artist you remember from it, unless that artist is actually the credit on the sleeve. You will search for the album name later, not for a guess.

Private and foreign compilations often miss a search. Add those by hand, with the title as printed. Upload a photo of the sleeve if you want the exact cover.

How this works in ViniVault

Search the compilation title and save that pressing. Open the record to see the tracks. Collection search includes those tracks, so a song title can find the album.

If you own both a compilation and the original single, they are two rows. The compilation did not replace the single, and the single is not a duplicate of the album.

Questions

Can I find a compilation by a song on it?
Yes. Collection search includes tracks, so a song title can lead you back to the record, provided that track list is on the copy you added.
What if the track list is missing?
Keep the record anyway. Add a note for the song you care about if the search did not bring a track list with it.
