ViniVault/Shelf
Record catalogue numbers and labels
The catalogue number and the label are how you tell pressings apart. ViniVault keeps them when you choose that release, and you can note anything it missed.

Look at the label, not only the sleeve
Sleeves get swapped. The label, the printed number, and the etch in the run-out are the copy. Write the number in the notes if you had to add the record by hand, so you are not relying on a cover that might belong to a different edition.
A photo of the label is sometimes clearer than a typed number. Upload it if the sleeve image is not enough. Your own photo is the picture the shelf will trust.
Two pressings can share a front cover and differ in the catalogue number, the country, and the year. Choosing the release that matches the label is the difference between a catalogue and a list of album titles.
When you know, and when you do not
If you are sure, pick that pressing in Add Records. The tracks and the sleeve then belong to that release, when they exist. If you are not sure, pick the closest match and say so in the notes. You can edit the record when you have checked.
An invented number is worse than a blank. If you cannot read the label, say that in the note. A wrong catalogue number will look authoritative later, which is exactly when it causes trouble.
How this works in ViniVault
Pick the pressing in Add Records so the release you saved is the one with that label. For entries you type yourself, put the catalogue number in the notes. Search still finds the artist and the title.
The price guide follows the release where it can. A handmade entry with no release behind it may have no market price until you type one. That is more honest than pricing the wrong pressing.
Questions
- What if two pressings share a sleeve?
- Choose the release that matches the label, and note the number if you are unsure. The cover is not the proof.
- Should I photograph every label?
- Photograph the ones that are easy to confuse, and any copy you added by hand. The ordinary ones can wait until you next play them.
